There are an estimated eight million date palms (Phoenix dactylifera in Arabic, nakhl) in Oman, and travelling around the Batinah you'll hardly ever be out of sight of the endless plantations which blanket the coast. A mature date palm (a cutting or offshoot can take up to 10 years to grow to maturity) can make much more than 250 pounds of dates a year, although most in cultivation are thinned out
